Body Mass Index [BMI] (or Quetelet Index):
(Indice de Masse Corporelle ou Index de Quetelet IMC): The body mass index
(BMI), or Quetelet index (Adolphe Quetelet, Belgian), is a measure of relative
weight based on an individual's mass and height. It's calculated as follows:
- BMI = (Weight in Pounds / (Height in inches x Height in inches) ) x 703
- Metric BMI Formula: BMI = ( Weight in Kilograms / ( Height in Meters x Height in Meters ) ).
- In both above cases, if BMI > 18.5 = Underweight; BMI: 18.5 - 24.9 = Normal weight; BMI: 25–29.9 = Overweight; BMI of 30 or greater = Obesity.
- Quick and practical way to find out if you're overfat: Multiply your waist size by 2. If the total is higher than your height (in inches), then you're overfat. Say your waist size is 36" and you're 5'11" tall: 36 x 2 = 72. Then you're 1 inch overfat.
