- Be prepared. Get CPR and First Aid training
- Make plans with friends and/or family as to where you all will meet in the event violence breaks out
- Make sure your phone is fully charged
- Carry a small flashlight
- If you’re going to outdoors public events, dress casually and comfortably, including good shoes (no flipflops)
- At the event, pay attention to your surroundings
- During the violence, run, hide, or fight (Public safety’s mantra)
- After the violence, if you’re OK, look for people who might need help, especially if the police and the Fire Department have not yet arrived
- According to the White House’s 2015 “Stop the bleed” National Awareness Campaign: move the person to safety if needed; apply firm and steady pressure to the bleeding site with both hands; apply a dressing and press; if bleeding continues, apply a tourniquet.
