With its sci-fi-like cityscape and constant drive toward innovation, Dubai is often called the city of the future. Hollywood filmmakers have wasted no time in getting here, with scenes from future-set blockbusters Independence Day: Resurgence and most recently, Star Trek Beyond, filmed in the emirate in October 2015. Fast forward to the future with the Dubai's latest ground-breaking innovations and plans.
Always stepping ahead of the innovation curve, at the 2017 World Government Summit, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that flying drones carrying individual passengers could begin regular operations as early as July of this year. The passenger drone prototype can currently carry one person weighing up to 100kg and will make flights lasting up to 30 minutes or 50km, travelling at speeds up to 160km per hour. Operation is easy, the passenger simply selects their destination through a touch screen and the drone is then auto-piloted from the command centre. If this becomes a routine part of Dubai’s transportation scene in the future, it could drastically reduce road traffic and accidents and – let’s face it – would be a very cool way to get around.
When it comes to architectural icons, there's no denying the world's tallest Burj Khalifa, the Cayan Tower (or 'twisty building' as it’s locally known) and the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab are the gleaming symbols of Dubai's skyline. They will eventually share the futuristic landscape with The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, a pin-like structure topping the Burj Khalifa in height and due to be built in time for Expo 2020. Plans are also underway for the Dubai Steps, a stairway ascending 100 metres into the clouds, and the world's tallest ferris wheel, Ain Dubai, located at the Bluewaters Island development off JBR.
